How Anua Azelaic Acid 10 Compares to Top Alternatives
Anua Azelaic Acid 10 Serum is a hydrating, Cica-infused fluid best for soothing sensitive skin and fading spots without pilling. In contrast, The Ordinary 10% Suspension offers a budget-friendly silicone cream with a matte finish that can pill under products, while Paula’s Choice 10% Booster combines azelaic and salicylic acids in a smooth cream base to target active breakouts and pores.
What Is Anua Azelaic Acid 10 Serum?
The Anua Azelaic Acid 10 Serum is a targeted treatment serum designed to address uneven skin tone, diffuse facial redness, and active congestion. Created by Anua—a Korean skincare brand famous for soothing formulations like their viral heartleaf line—this serum brings a well-researched clinical active into an accessible, everyday format.
Azelaic acid is a dicarboxylic acid naturally derived from grains like barley, wheat, and rye, though synthetic forms are typically used in cosmetics for superior purity and stability. While prescription-strength azelaic acid usually ranges between 15% and 20%, a 10% over-the-counter concentration provides significant therapeutic benefits with a much lower risk of stinging or irritation.
By blending Anua Azelaic Acid with Korean botanical tradition, Anua offers a balanced formula that fights skin discoloration while keeping the moisture barrier intact.
Full Anua Azelaic Acid Serum Ingredients Breakdown
Understanding what goes onto your face is the foundation of smart skincare. Below is the full chemical breakdown of the Anua azelaic acid serum ingredients, categorized by their functional roles within the formula.
1. The Active Star Component
- Azelaic Acid (10%): The backbone of this serum. It acts as a gentle keratolytically active compound that loosens dead skin cells, inhibits tyrosinase (the enzyme responsible for excess melanin production), and neutralizes acne-causing bacteria (Cutibacterium acnes).
2. Soothing & Calming Botanical Agents
- Centella Asiatica Extract (Cica): A legendary botanical ingredient rich in asiaticoside and madecassic acid. It accelerates micro-wound healing, repairs a damaged skin barrier, and reduces cutaneous inflammation.
- Houttuynia Cordata Extract (Heartleaf): Anua’s signature ingredient. Known for powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, it soothes flushing and protects cells from environmental oxidative stress. If you are a fan of heartleaf cleansing products, check out our in-depth Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil Reviews.
- Dipotassium Glycyrrhizinate (Licorice Root Derivative): Inhibits inflammatory cascades and brightens post-acne dark marks.
- Tea Tree Leaf Extract: Offers natural antimicrobial protection to help prevent new acne blemishes from taking root.
3. Deep Hydration & Barrier Cushioning
- Sodium Hyaluronate & Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid: Multi-molecular weights of hyaluronic acid draw moisture into different dermal layers, plumping fine lines and countering any drying tendencies of acid exfoliation. To understand the differences between humectants, read our analysis on hyaluronic acid vs glycerin.
- Glycerin: A classic humectant that maintains stratum corneum hydration and prevents trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL).
- Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5): A skin-restorative compound that converts to pantothenic acid, supporting lipid synthesis and keeping skin soft.
4. Supporting Hydroxy Acids (Gentle Exfoliation Blend)
- Salicylic Acid (BHA): Present in low, supportive doses to clear excess sebum from deep inside pores. For stronger BHA treatments, read our COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid Reviews.
- Lactic Acid (AHA): Helps gently polish the superficial skin layer for immediate radiance.
- Gluconolactone (PHA): A large-molecule polyhydroxy acid that provides ultra-gentle surface renewal while acting as an antioxidant.
5. Stabilizers, Solvents & Emulsifiers
- Water/Aqua/Eau: The base carrier for water-soluble ingredients.
- Propanediol & Butylene Glycol: Safe, non-comedogenic solvents that improve ingredient penetration and skin feel.
- 1,2-Hexanediol: Functions as a mild preservative and humectant.
- Xanthan Gum & Carbomer: Viscosity-adjusting agents that give the serum its smooth, effortless spreadability.
Science Deep Dive: How Azelaic Acid Works on Your Skin
To truly appreciate the Anua Azelaic Acid 10 Serum, it helps to understand the underlying biology of how azelaic acid transforms troubled skin.
1. Tyrosinase Inhibition & Hyperpigmentation
When your skin experiences an acne breakout, injury, or UV exposure, melanocytes overproduce pigment as a defense mechanism, leaving behind post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Azelaic acid selectively targets hyperactive, abnormal melanocytes by inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase. Crucially, it leaves normally functioning pigment cells untouched, making it safe for all skin tones without the risk of unwanted bleaching.
2. Normalizing Keratinization
A primary cause of acne breakouts is abnormal follicular keratinization—when sticky dead skin cells pool inside pores alongside sebum. Azelaic acid normalizes this cell turnover rate, preventing micro-comedones from forming in the first place.
3. Neutralizing Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS)
For individuals dealing with rosacea or persistent flushing, inflammatory chemical messengers and reactive oxygen species destroy capillary walls and create visible redness. According to clinical research published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), azelaic acid scavenges free radicals and suppresses pro-inflammatory cytokines, making it one of the few exfoliant acids safe and effective for rosacea-prone skin.
Skin Benefits & Expected Transformation
What real-world results can you expect when adding the Anua azelaic acid serum to your regular skincare line-up?
Fades Dark Spots & Post-Acne Marks
Whether dealing with lingering red marks (post-inflammatory erythema / PIE) or stubborn brown spots (PIH), the combination of 10% Azelaic Acid and Licorice Derivative works synergistically to break up hyperpigmentation clusters for a more uniform complexion.
Calms Flushing and Diffuse Redness
If you struggle with environmental sensitivity, heat flushing, or rosacea, the soothing botanical blend of Centella and Heartleaf instantly lowers skin temperature and dampens inflammatory flare-ups.
Unclogs Pores and Smoothes Rough Texture
By pairing azelaic acid with supporting micro-doses of BHA, AHA, and PHA, this serum smooths rough, bumpy skin without causing the harsh peeling or stinging associated with heavy single-acid peeling liquids.
Balances Sebum Without Stripping
Unlike heavy spot treatments that dry out surrounding skin, the built-in hyaluronic acid and panthenol complex keep moisture locked in, making it ideal for maintaining a balanced oil-water ratio in combination skin types.
Real Transformations: Anua Azelaic Acid Before and After Expectations
It is essential to maintain realistic expectations when evaluating Anua azelaic acid before and after results.
- Weeks 1–2: The initial focus is on soothing and repair. Active red bumps cool down, and skin irritation decreases.
- Weeks 4–6: Texture improvements become obvious. Skin feels softer, oiliness is better managed, and small congestion bumps begin to clear.
- Weeks 8+: Tone correction reaches peak effectiveness. Dark marks fade significantly, revealing an even, luminous base.
Pro Tip: To accurately track your progress, take weekly photos in identical natural lighting without filters. Dark spot fading happens gradually, and direct visual comparison is the best way to verify progress!
Texture, Scent, and Sensory Experience
A product’s effectiveness matters most when you enjoy using it daily.
- Appearance: A clear to slightly off-white, semi-viscous fluid serum.
- Scent: Fragrance-free. It carries a subtle, natural clean scent from its raw botanical extracts, with zero artificial perfumes.
- Spreadability: Glides effortlessly across the face. A little goes a long way—3 to 4 drops easily cover the entire face and neck.
- Finish: Dries down to a weightless, non-sticky, hydrated finish. It does not leave a greasy film, making it an excellent choice under makeup.
How to Use Anua Azelaic Acid 10 Serum in Your Routine
To maximize benefits while minimizing the chance of irritation, follow this recommended application guide:
Step-by-Step Application Protocol
- Cleanse Thoroughly: Wash your face with a mild, pH-balanced cleanser and pat skin dry.
- Apply Toner: If using a hydrating toner, apply it first and allow it to absorb fully. You can pair it with soothing options like the Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Toner Review or the Paula’s Choice Skin Balancing Toner.
- Dispense Serum: Apply 3–4 drops of Anua Azelaic Acid 10 Serum onto clean hands. Gently press and massage it over your face, avoiding the immediate eye and lip contour.
- Lock in Moisture: Follow with your favorite moisturizer to seal in hydration. If you need a reliable formula for sensitive skin, check our guides on the best non-comedogenic moisturizer, Vanicream Enhanced Moisturizer Review, or Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream Review.
- Protect (AM Only): Always finish your morning routine with a broad-spectrum sunscreen. For comparisons on top sunscreens, read EltaMD UV Clear vs Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen, Ultra Violette Supreme Sunscreen Review, or Thinkbaby Sunscreen Review.
Patch Testing Protocol
Before applying any new active serum to your entire face, perform a patch test:
- Apply a small drop of serum behind your ear or on your inner forearm.
- Wait 24 to 48 hours.
- If no burning, severe itching, or hives occur, proceed with face application.
Ingredient Compatibility: What to Pair & What to Avoid
Combining actives thoughtfully is the key to achieving great results without compromising your skin barrier.
Perfect Pairings
- Niacinamide: Works remarkably well alongside azelaic acid to strengthen the moisture barrier, control excess oil, and double down on hyperpigmentation fading.
- Hyaluronic Acid & Ceramides: Hydrating ingredients cushion active delivery and prevent dryness. For deep hydration options, check out our review of the Anua PDRN Hyaluronic Acid 100 serum or Torriden Dive In Serum Review.

Proceed with Caution

Comparison Breakdown: Anua Azelaic Acid vs. Top Alternatives
When comparing iconic 10% Azelaic Acid treatments, each formula caters to distinct skin needs, textures, and budgetary preferences.
Anua Azelaic Acid 10 Serum stands out with its lightweight, hydrating fluid texture that absorbs quickly without feeling sticky. Built specifically for sensitive and acne-prone skin types, it combines its 10% active acid with soothing barrier support—including Centella Asiatica (Cica), Heartleaf, and Hyaluronic Acid. This creates a dewy, weightless finish that easily layers under other products while actively defending against irritation and redness.
By contrast, The Ordinary 10% Suspension is a budget-focused option designed with a thick, silicone-based cream formulation. While highly cost-effective, it lacks additional skin-soothing or hydrating active ingredients. Its matte finish offers oil-control benefits, but it is notoriously prone to pilling when layered beneath heavier moisturizers or sunscreen.
Lastly, Paula’s Choice 10% Booster delivers a targeted spot-treatment approach in a lightweight cream consistency. Formulated with Salicylic Acid (BHA) and Licorice Root, it focuses heavily on unclogging pores and clearing active breakouts, offering moderate barrier support alongside a natural, smooth finish.
Anua vs. The Ordinary Azelaic Acid 10% Suspension
While The Ordinary offers an affordable entry-point azelaic acid, its heavy silicone base frequently causes pilling under sunscreen and makeup. Anua’s watery-fluid serum texture absorbs faster, layers far better, and provides significantly more soothing botanical relief. To explore brand philosophies further, read our guide on The Ordinary vs Paula’s Choice.
Anua vs. Paula’s Choice 10% Azelaic Acid Booster
Paula’s Choice combines azelaic acid with salicylic acid in a lightweight lotion texture. While effective, it can feel too drying for sensitive skin types. Anua offers a gentler option by pairing its active content with hyaluronic acid, Cica, and Heartleaf for enhanced comfort. Safety Profile, Side Effects & Precautions
According to safety guidelines established by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), azelaic acid is widely recognized as one of the safest and most versatile active ingredients available in over-the-counter skincare.
Potential Mild Side Effects:
- Mild Tingling: A light, transient tingling sensation during the first few applications is normal as skin adjusts.
- Mild Dryness: If used too frequently without a proper moisturizer, slight flaky patches may form around the mouth or nose.
How to Manage Potential Side Effects:
- Buffer Method: Apply your moisturizer first, let it absorb, then apply the serum on top. This slows down ingredient absorption without reducing overall efficacy.
- Frequency Adjustment: Start using the serum 2 to 3 times per week, gradually increasing to daily use as your skin builds tolerance.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can I use Anua Azelaic Acid 10 Serum every day?
Yes, once your skin has built tolerance. Start by using it 2 to 3 times per week, then gradually increase to once or twice daily depending on how your skin responds.
Does Azelaic Acid cause skin purging?
Because azelaic acid accelerates cell turnover and offers mild keratolytic properties, mild purging (small breakouts in areas where you normally break out) can occur during the first 2 to 4 weeks. This usually settles as pores clear out.
Is Anua Azelaic Acid safe for pregnancy?
Azelaic acid is widely considered one of the safest acne and hyperpigmentation treatments during pregnancy by dermatologists (FDA Category B). However, always consult your personal healthcare provider before adding new actives to your maternity skincare routine.
Can I layer this serum with Vitamin C?
If you have sensitive skin, it is best to separate them: use Vitamin C in the morning for antioxidant protection and Anua Azelaic Acid at night. If you use a gentle derivative, like the one in Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop Price, monitor your skin for any redness before layering.
Final Verdict: Is Anua Azelaic Acid 10 Serum Worth It?
The Anua Azelaic Acid 10 Serum stands out as a remarkably well-rounded formulation in the modern skincare landscape. By pairing clinical-strength 10% Azelaic Acid with barrier-loving ingredients like Centella Asiatica, Heartleaf, and Hyaluronic Acid, Anua has created a product that delivers potent results without compromising skin health.
Whether you are struggling with persistent post-acne marks, chronic redness, or uneven texture, this serum offers an elegant, fast-absorbing solution that fits seamlessly into almost any skincare regimen.
